The author reflects upon emerging data on the long-term use of the widely implemented
triple therapy antiviral protocol and notes that despite impressive reductions in plasma
viraemia, treated patients who have been taken off triple therapy soon see viraemia rebound
to earlier levels. Although there is, of course, a role for antiviral therapy in managing the
infection, the author notes that there is now more than ever a need to develop longer term
immune-based interventions to eradicate the virus.
