Ceramide (Cer) accumulating during the execution phase of apoptosis is generated from
plasma membrane sphingomyelin (SM), which gains access to a sphingomyelinase due to
phospholipid scrambling (Tepper, AD, Ruurs, P., Wiedmer, T., Sims, P., Borst, J., and van
