The skin is one of the larger organs of the body covering a surface area of about 2m2 in man
and about 0.008 m2 in the mouse and weighing about 2.1 kg and 3.3 g respectively. It
provides a continuous protective outer sheath to the body and extends into the various
orificesto maintain a continuous covering of oral, respiratory, gastro-intestinal, anal and
urino-genital epithelium. Hence to some extent consideration of structure, function and their
impairment by cytotoxic factors overlap for these internal and external epithelia.
