What we now call clinical science started to flourish vigorously in the early years of the 20th
century. Within a brief decade or so several important institutions were founded, the attitudes
of leading physicians began to change, and a new awareness and expectancy affected
laymen. These various aspects helped to lay the foundation of clinical science, but they did
